It's not as if, once I'm aware that better than 90% of what I'm saying is conveyed with body language, I can revert to unaware. And if 90%+ of the message I am attempting to convey is physical: tone of voice, pacing and volume of speech, gesture, stance and posture, fidget frequency, eye contact, the way I hold my face? It's a lot to leave to luck. It's leaving money, friendship, and love on the table. The good Ms. Hale Alter won't let that happen to you.

Body language has the force of law. Everyone is subject to its effects, but it’s possible to go beyond the default of subconscious, unconsidered body language to leverage it consciously. Just getting through half of the book was helpful for me. I had a very important presentation to deliver in front of some very important people. By the time presentation day rolled around, I was only halfway through the book. But I applied the advice given in the first half and I must say it worked! The key is is drill down on each thing you are trying to improve on. Practice practice practice!

Other books of this type tend to take an inside to outside approach you're told to use visualization to work on internal attributes (confidence, charisma, etc), and that the rest will more-or-less follow. This book approached it from the opposite direction your told to focus on adopting specific external behaviors and habits. I noticed that in following these instructions, the effect was immediate and dramatic, and it was shocking for me to realize that a few simple changes in my body language could have such a dramatic impact on how I'm treated- by both strangers and people I've known for years. This book is one of the best books in this class that I've read, and I will be reading it again soon.
Sound advice. Worth it!
This is a good foundation for aspiring leaders. I have studied and practiced leadership both in the military and in corporate life and much of what is said here is common across the board. I have to say this is readable and easily adopted, so it would be a good foundational book for those looking to expand their careers.
Most of these are common sense tips that although I dont agree with, they are geared more toward someone early in their career, not experienced.

Takes bad to good, NOT Good to Great
I wish more books were like this. The chapters are short not because they lack content but because they break down important concepts into only their most important parts. As a result, this is an effective and easy to read primer on nonverbal communication.

The videos at the end of each chapter are excellent too. It's one thing to read about the importance of strong posture. But seeing how much just a slight slouch takes away from authority drives the point home.
